Ever find yourself in the middle of a task and ask yourself “why am I doing this?” That was me this morning, based in large part on the picture attached. Could be snow coming, at least that’s what they say. Earlier today I saw us in a 6 to 8” band – which has now morphed to 8 to 10 inches. I’m kinda’ right in the center of that. The thought of snow coming prompted me to think about what jobs around the home office and hobby farm I’d be even more frustrated to do with bucketloads of snow on the ground. So that led me to our chicken houses – yes, we have two chicken houses and maybe two dozen chickens - I’ll share the story about the “why” another time – and I cleaned the houses. It’s not the most pleasant job in the world but it’s gotta’ be done. And even in the middle of it (because it’s cold, too) I asked myself “why am I doing this?” It’s an easy answer – “because I would hate doing this even more in 8 inches of snow.” Funny how clarity comes all the sudden like that. Later I jogged four miles – the “why” of that is working towards a goal of running the Indy mini-marathon with 3 of my favorite people and their favorite people.
Which leads me to the question “Why am I doing this tax/accounting thing?” I mean there’s the “we all need to work” piece, and last week I briefly touched on the concept of the intersection of competence and humility, but what really gets me excited? I get excited about the thought of truly being a help and blessing to clients and friends. In spite of the phrase “treat others how you want to be treated” – we’re all wired differently, right? Minor example – I’m happy to meet wherever and whenever my clients/friends prefer. There’s no need for me to be an “8 to 5” person. If evenings work better for you – great! Some people like having me come to their house/business as a convenience. Others prefer to come to my office. I sincerely mean this when I say it’s all about you. So snow may come – or not – but tax time is definitely here. I have to say from what I’ve seen so far, I expect a fair amount of “knowledge evolution” especially in terms of Covid-related tax legislation. Feel free to reach out – I’m glad to help. And it IS all about you.
